

About Torben
Torben Steeg is a freelance consultant in education, specialising in curriculum
development, evaluation and research in secondary education in Design &
Technology (D&T), Information and Communication Technologies (ICT),
Science and Mathematics. He is also an Honorary Research Fellow in the University
of Manchester Faculty of Education.
Research interests include the interactions between the subjects of D&T,
ICT, Science and Mathematics, the uses of ICTs in schools and, within D&T,
systems thinking, control technologies and the uses of ICTs, including CAD,
to support learning.
He is external examiner for the KS2/3 D&T course and the PGCEs in D&T
and Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University.
He works with the Nuffield D&T
Project and is a Curriculum Adviser for the Electronics in Schools Strategy.
He is a member of the editorial boards for the Design
and Technology Association's (DATA) ‘Journal of Design & Technology
Education’ and annual International Research Conference as well as
the IEE’s ‘Electronics
Education’. He is also a member of DATA’s Initial Teacher
Education Advisory Group and of the Electronics
in Schools Strategy Steering Group as well as being an accredited trainer
for the PRO/Desktop and ECT
initiatives.
His first degree was a Joint honours in Physics and Computer Science (University
of Manchester, 1979). Following that he worked in youth work for 4 years
before embarking on a PGCE in Technology Education, also at the University
of Manchester. He went on to teach D&T, Control Technology, Science
and IT before returning to the University of Manchester as a Research Fellow,
initially to work with the Technology Enhancement
Programme (TEP). From 1998 until January 2004 he was a Lecturer in Education,
being Subject Leader for the PGCE D&T course, jointly responsible for
supporting the development of students’ understanding of ICT use across
all PGCE courses and a tutor on the MEd 'ICT in Education' course.
He is currently attempting to complete a PhD focused on the uses and understandings
of systems thinking in D&T education.
