About Teacher Education and CPD
Current and recent teacher education and continuing professional development (CPD)
Torben is an accredited trainer for both the CAD
in schools (Pro/DESKTOP) and the ECT
initiatives. He runs courses for teachers under both initiatives.
In addition, he runs a TTA funded Subject Knowledge Booster Course in ECT
for the PGCE D&T course at the University of Manchester and teaches
occasionally at other teacher training institutions.
He has contributed to BECTa's ICT in D&T
'Ask an Expert' sessions as well as to a BECTa organised ICT
in D&T online INSET session.
In July 2004 and 2005 Torben (with John
Martin in 2004) ran ECT workshops at the DATA
conference in Sheffield.
In November 2004 Torben ran a series of 'ICTin ECT' workshops as a part
of an 'ICT in D&T' Roadshow at Silverstone racecourse organised by BECTa.
As a follow on to this Torben will be running a national course in February
2006 to train regional 'ICT in ECT' trainers who will funded, later in 2006,
to run their own regional ICT in ECT courses. For more information about
this programme please contact the consultancy.
In March 2006 Torben wil be running a linked series of microcontroller workshops
for teachers in the Trenton area of New Jersey, USA.
Forthcoming courses for teachers are detailed in the courses section of this website. Information on some other CPD related events (such as talks at conferences) can be found in the news section of the site.
Both INSET and ITE work can be arranged to suit individual needs. Please contact the consultancy for more information.
Previous teacher education and CPD
During the 1990s Torben was engaged in developing, running and contributing
to INSET (in-service teacher education) and ITE (initial teacher education)
courses for both Secondary and Primary teachers. These took place both at
the University of Manchester and in schools. The use of ICT to support children's
learning and to encourage inter-disciplinary learning between D&T, Science
and Mathematics was either the focus or a significant strand of most courses.
INSET courses were developed and taught in association with Alan
Jervis and included;
- Systems Electronics in Design and Technology
- A Systems Approach to the Teaching of Control
- The use of Integrated Learning Systems in Schools
- Using the Internet in Education
- Writing Web Pages for Education
- Datalogging in Science
- Datalogging in Mathematics
During this period ITE courses (also planned and taught in association with Alan Jervis) included:
- Personal ICT skills for Science Teachers (for ITE students on behalf of the Teacher Training Agency)
- Personal ICT skills for D&T Teachers (for ITE students on behalf of the Teacher Training Agency)
From 1998 to January 2004 Torben was a Lecturer in the Faculty of Education at the University of Manchester. His responsibilities included Subject Leadership of the D&T PGCE course, the development (again with Alan Jervis) of generic ICT support for PGCE students in all subjects and work on an MEd in 'ICT in Education', including development of the course, teaching on various units and dissertation support. During this period CPD work continued both with mentors attached to the teacher training programme and more widely.
