University of Manchester
Torben and John Martin will be running two four day courses, as a part of the ECT initiative, as follows:
'Starting out in electronics'
Aimed at teachers whose experience of teaching ECT is limited and who wish develop their expertise into this area. The course will enable participants to introduce modern approaches to the teaching of ECT (such as systems and microcontrollers/PICs) into KS3.
11th & 13th March 2006, 19th & 20th May 2006
'Taking electronics further'
Aimed at teachers who have some experience of teaching ECT, perhaps at KS3, and wish to develop and update their knowledge. The course will enable participants to introduce more modern technologies (such as microcontrollers/PICs) into their teaching and to extend teaching to GCSE.

Other Electronics & Communication Technology (ECT) courses [Spring/Summer 2006]

Trenton, New Jersey USA
Torben will be running three 4-hour afternoon/evening workshops for teachers at the College of New Jersey in Trenton on the 27th - 29th March 2006. This follows the ITEA annual conference in Baltimore.
The focus of these workshops will be on the use of microcontroller technologies to enhance control-based work in Technology and Engineering, The three linked sessions will introduce low-cost and easy to program microcontroller systems and look at some of the practical and pedagogical advantages of microcontrollers, Participants will assemble a microcontroller system and take this away with them along with the necessary software and connector to allow them to continue programming work after the workshop. The course will include work with a wide range of input and output devices and the application of microcontroller systems to work in robotics.
The organisation of this workshop series is being undertaken by Torben and Ron Todd of the College of New Jersey. If you are interested please do contact the consultancy or Ron.
Further details will be posted here shortly.

Manchester ECT hub Activities [Spring/Summer 2006]

The Manchester Electronics and Communications Technology (ECT) hub has been funded to continue its activities for a further year.
This University of Manchester based hub is one of two supporting ECT in the NW region and works in partnership with local LEAs, SETPoints and Universities. Three accredited ECT trainers are closely linked to the hub; John Martin, David Spendlove and Torben.
Free events for teachers of D&T being run by the Manchester hub during the Spring and Summer term 2006 include an ECT and sustainability workshop and a KS3 development programme designed to help you modernise your KS3 electronics work and bring it line with the KS3 Strategy. Further activities are in development and will be announced on this page.
New this year are LEA based ECT 'spokes' that will be running their own local programmes of support for teachers. We have been able to establish 3 spokes this year and expect to add others as funding allows in the future. The three are:
Stockport, Kingsway School. Organiser David Leask. First meeting: 16th February
Oldham. The Radclyffe School. Organiser David Taylor. First meeting: 8th March
Tameside, Hyde Technology School. Organiser Ken Earith. First meeting: 9th March

Further details of hub and spoke activities along with locations are available.
