Welcome to the Fab@School blog
Fab@School is, initially, a development of Fab@Home (see image) for UK schools undertaken by Torben Steeg with David Barlex from the Nuffield D&T project and Martin Stevens from Unimatic. Our first aim is for Torben and David to build and test one of the standard (US imperial) Fab@Home kits and the progress of this will be reported in the blog. At the same time Unimatic are working to create and source a metric version of the kit for the UK market. Once we have established that the kit is sufficiently easy to build, we will start to work with UK schools to examine its curriculum potential. We are also keeping a close eye on the RepRap development.
Once these initial forays into fabbing in school are successful, we will be seeking (well, we already are…) funding for some serious curriculum development in this area.
I’m hoping that the bits from the States will arrive in the next few weeks, and once they do we’ll start the building and keep a detailed log of progress here.
In the meantime, if this project sounds interesting to you, you can get involved by subscribing to the RSS feeds (at the foot and right of this page) and by registering (on the right of this page) so that you can comment on posts.
We are particularly interested to hear from people working in UK schools (or schools in other countries) who are either involved in fabbing in their schools or would like to be.
Torben
